Experiment 4: Balloon Racers
Balloon Racers are wonderful toys that cost next to nothing! They are fun to play with and teach kids about lung capacity and air power! Inavertently, they also learn about drag, air resistance, and friction when they try to find ways to make their balloon racer go faster.

Carefully cut a hole at the bottom of the bottle big enough to insert a straw in. The flap will be used to secure the straw with a piece of clear tape. Cut an opening on the side of the bottle. Yup...right there! That's where the straw exits! Ta-dah! Now, attach two straws to the bottle using some clear tape. Insert the barbecue skewers into one bottle cap, then into the straw, and lastly into the other bottle cap. Ta-Dah! Using the wire cutters, cut off the excess skewer. Safety first! Cut off the bottom part of the balloon. It makes it easier to attach to the straw. Tape around the balloon making sure it is air tight! Secure the straw to the bottle with a piece of tape so the balloon won't wiggle around later on. That's it! Blow through the straw, release, and have fun! Watch this! |
