Let's go through the process of making homemade ice cream, shall we?
You will need the following:
1/2 cup milk
(I find that whole milk works and tastes best. However, you can try using skimmed or low fat milk. You can also try using soy milk.) |
1 teaspoon sugar
(or depending on your taste...but remember, too much sugar is not good for you!) If you are health conscious, you can use Stevia instead of regular sugar. Stevia is a natural herb sweetener made from the leaves of the plant. You can actually grow a Stevia plant in your home and use the leaves directly! I tried it and it's like eating candy!
|
2 to 3 drops of
Food Flavoring (Kids love chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors!) |
2 cups of ice (Don't be stingy with ice or else you'll end up with cold milk or slush instead of ice cream!) |
4 Tablespoons of ROCK salt (Don't be stingy with this as well!) (click on photo
to enlarge) You can buy rock salt from Taste or Park N Shop. It costs around $5 per bag. |
2 Ziploc
sandwich bags (You can use any sandwich bag that locks. I just like Ziploc because it has a double lock and is made of a sturdier plastic.) |
1 Ziploc
gallon bag (Again, you can use any brand...) |
Towel
(Need to wrap the ice bag or else your hands will freeze!) |
MUSIC!
I use Black Eyed Peas "I GOTTA A FEELING" and Katrina and the Waves "WALKING ON SUNSHINE"! (Shaking the bag for about 10 minutes can be both boring and tiring. However, shaking the bag to the beat of funky music makes it fun! Think of it this way -- exercise before enjoying your ice cream!) |
Your favorite toppings!
|
PROCEDURE:
Pour cup of milk into the sandwich baggie. Add sugar and flavoring. Seal the baggie, removing as much air as possible. Take the baggie and insert it into another sandwich bag. This will make sure that the inner bag with the ice cream mix does not get salty! Put 2 cups of ice and 4 tablespoons of rock salt into the gallon sized baggie. Put the ice cream mix into the ice bag. Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible. Wrap the ice bag with the towel. Play the music and start shaking! Remember, YOU MUST KEEP ON SHAKING THE BAG or else your ice cream will not set! Make sure you chose songs that will last for about 10 minutes. Time to "harvest" your ice cream! Pull out the sandwich baggies. Rinse the outer baggie before opening to make sure all the salt water washes off. Scoop out your ice cream! Garnish with your favorite toppings and ENJOY! |
